Which Flare Does What?
Different flare types perform different functions, primarily determined by the time of day that the signal is required – for example, a daylight flare may not be visible at night and vice versa.
Red Hand
Red Hand flares are primarily designed for night use in short range signalling situations. Daylight deployment is also satisfactory but with reduced range.

Red Parachute Rocket
Red Parachute Rocket flares are day or night, long range distress signals. A manually activated wire trigger ejects a red flare on a parachute at a height of 300 metres.
Orange Smoke
Orange Smoke flares are for daytime use only and feature a dense cloud of vivid expanding orange smoke providing effective position marking or indication of wind direction during rescue operations.

White Hand & White Parachute Rocket
White Hand & White Parachute Rocket flares are used primarily at night as a collision warning signal or for illuminating areas where an intense white light is required.
Use Flares Wisely
As most vessels have only a limited number of distress flares on hand, they should only be used to raise an alarm and visually pin-point your position if there are reasonable expectations they will be seen by potential rescuers.
